Abstract

A new, simple, highly sensitive and selective method for the spectrophotometric determination of sulfite based on the preconcentration with in-vessel headspace liquid-phase microextraction method has been developed. It includes the release of sulfur dioxide vapor from 10 mL of an aqueous solution of sample in the reaction of sulfite with an excess of orthophosphoric acid and absorption by 100 μL of 0.1 mM 5,5`-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic) acid. The acceptor phase was placed in the headspace above the solution in a specially designed container. The extraction takes 20 min by stirring of the sample solution with 1200 rpm. The absorbance was measured at 350 nm in a quartz microcuvette with a volume of 50 μL and an optical path of 10 mm. The calibration graph is linear in the range from 26 to 260 μg L–1 (as SO2) with a detection limit of 8 μg L–1. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the content of sulfite in alcoholic drinks, jam, and juices.
